Two ways to estimate your pension

Start with the quick version if you just want a ballpark figure. Use the advanced version when you want to enter your income, super and assets item by item, the way Services Australia assesses them.

Simple estimator

Three inputs: your financial assets, other assets and any other income. Best for a quick, reliable ballpark.
  • Single or couple, homeowner or not
  • Your result in under two minutes
  • Charts showing where you sit against the cut-offs
  • Full workings for both tests

Advanced estimator

A seven-step walk-through of your income, superannuation, financial assets, other assets and excluded assets.
  • Itemised income, super and asset categories
  • Handles account-based pensions, defined benefit and lifetime income streams
  • Live summary bar as you go
  • Payment schedule and combined-income chart
The two tests

How the Age Pension is worked out

Services Australia runs two tests on your circumstances and pays whichever gives the lower amount. Both estimators follow the same three steps.

1. The assets test

Everything you own except your home is added up: savings, super, investments, cars, contents. Above a free area, your pension drops by $3 a fortnight for every $1,000 of extra assets.

2. The income test

Your income from work, rent or pensions, plus income that is deemed on your financial assets. Above a free area, the pension reduces by 50 cents for every extra dollar.

3. The lower result is paid

Both tests produce a fortnightly figure. You are paid the lower of the two, up to the maximum rate for your situation.

About the estimator

Built by people who know the system

The model behind these estimators was built in Excel by Julie Clune, a former Services Australia employee and IT teacher, and rebuilt for the web by DeCODE Digital in Perth. Every rate and threshold is taken straight from the published guide, and every step of the working is shown so nothing is hidden.

It is deliberately a guide, not advice. When you are ready to make decisions, Services Australia’s free Financial Information Service or a licensed adviser can look at your full situation.

Common questions

Short answers to the things people ask most. The guides on this site go into more detail.

What age can I get the Age Pension?

Age Pension age is 67 for anyone born on or after 1 January 1957. You also need to meet residence rules, usually 10 years as an Australian resident with at least five of those in one stretch. The estimators on this site do not check eligibility; they estimate the rate you could receive if you qualify.

Does my home count as an asset?

What is deeming?

Can I still get a part pension if I have savings?

How accurate is the estimate?

Is anything I type saved?
